Microsoft has been supporting a more secure logon mechanism, namely modern authentication, for accessing Exchange Online as an optional feature. According to the latest Microsoft announcement, this will be enforced starting from 1 Oct 2022.
ITSC has carried out this enforcement by phases starting Mar 2020 in advance of the Microsoft announced deadline to ensure a smooth transition. For active students, the final encorcement date will be 4 Jan 2022 and for alumni, the enforcement will start from 4 Jan 2022 up to 2 Jul 2022.

The advantage of using these apps is that they support Two Factor Authentication (2FA, for student accounts only). After modern authentication is enforced, your mailbox is fully protected against the risk of password leakage.
When setting up a new email app, you will just need to approve the sign-in request with 2FA (using your mobile device, etc.), for one time only, per application per device (e.g. perform 2FA for both Mail for iOS and Outlook for iOS if they need to set up on the same mobile). You may consider to reset your password after modern authentication is enforced. After your password has been changed, please refer to the webpage Reminders after Password Change if necessary.
