Student Residential Network (ResNet) Connection and Usage

What is ResNet?

The Residential Network (ResNet) is one of ITSC’s major services for students residing in student halls. This part of the campus network enables users to check e-mails, submit assignments, view online course notes, search library catalogs, reserve reference books, surf the Internet for academic research, or view a live video broadcast of campus events such as distinguished lectures.

You can also write your own blogs or tweets, log in to Google+ or Facebook to interact with friends, listen to online radio, and watch your favorite YouTube videos or TV broadcasts during your free time.

Wired ResNet and Wireless ResNet are available, both employing the latest network technologies to ensure high-quality and reliable services. Wired ResNet is useful if you are running applications which demand high bandwidth or for fixed Internet device, i.e. device that always connects to the same wall outlet. Wireless ResNet is useful if your internet device does not have a network port, your applications do not demand high bandwidth, you need immediate network access for short time durations such as to check e-mails or read news, or you are located in an area where Wired ResNet is not available.

ResNet Coverage

At present, ResNet connects Undergraduate Halls I-IX, SKCC Hall, University Apartments Towers A-B, Jockey Club Global Graduate Tower and Jockey Club Hall in Tseung Kwan O. Wireless ResNet broadcasts the same SSID (eduroam) as the campus Wi-Fi service and is available in all hostel rooms and public areas, such as common rooms and canteens. Wired ResNet provides over 5,000 in-room connections, offering each hall resident a dedicated 100 Mbps switched Ethernet network connection point.

Getting Connected to ResNet

There are two methods to connect to ResNet:

             The Wired ResNet provides wired network connectivity on computers and other devices in Student Halls.

             The Wireless Resnet provides secure, wireless network access in Student Halls.      

Wired ResNet

You need to register your computer or device by Wired Network Registration Systems to connect to Wired ResNet.

Network Registration System (NetReg)

NetReg is a Network Registration System to simplify and automate the registration of devices connecting to the Wired ResNet Network.

  To register a device automatically

  1. Connect your computer to the wall outlet
  2. Open a web browser and enter the web address netreg.ust.hk, an ITSC Network Registration Page will appear
  3. Enter your ITSC username and password
  4. Read the acceptable use policy and click "Register" to complete the registration
  5. Wait for a few minutes and reboot your computer
     

  To register a device manually

  You need to use manual registration if your device does not support web browser, e.g. printers and game consoles.

  To ADD device registration:

  1. On any computer already connected to the HKUST network, open a web browser and enter the web address netreg.ust.hk/manualreg.php
  2. Enter your ITSC username and password
  3. In the left navigation, click "Manual Registration"
  4. Enter the MAC address of the device (see the manufacturer's instructions to find the device's MAC address)
  5. Click "Submit" to complete the registration
  6. Wait for a few minutes and reboot your device
     

  To DELETE device registration:

  1. In the left navigation, click "Registered Devices"
  2. View the registered devices associated with your username
  3. Click the "X" button next to the registration record you wish to delete
     
Wireless ResNet

In order to connect to Wireless ResNet:

  1. You must have an ITSC network account.
  2. The Internet device must support WPA2

In general, newer operating systems (e.g. Windows 10, macOS and iOS) can search for Wireless ResNet and configure themselves automatically. With older operating systems, you will need to pre-configure the device. Refer to our Configuration Guides for details.
