Campus Network Infrastructure

The HKUST Campus Network Infrastructure is based on an extensible switched network fabric architecture that can support the emerging high-speed 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet technology. This architecture also enables the convergence of a data network and storage area network (SAN) with the support of fiber channel over ethernet (FCoE) technology, which consolidates SAN-based fiber channel traffic and network data traffic on a unified network fabric.

Connected to the Core switches are 100-plus distribution switches with Gigabit Ethernet or 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks across the Campus including Academic Buildings, Cheng Yu Tung Building, Lee Shau Kee Campus, Student Halls and Senior Staff Quarters. The distribution switches then link up numerous Access Switches in 170-plus Wiring Closets to provide Gigabit Ethernet connection to Desktops, IP Phones, IOT Devices and Wireless Access Points.
