Accessing Campus Online Resources from Mainland

Students and Staff in Mainland may experience slow loading time when accessing online resources of HKUST (e.g. Learning Management System - Canvas, Library online resources, departmental online resources, etc.). This may be due to traffic congestion at the public Internet connection paths crossing the border of Mainland.

To help speed up access from Mainland, Web and SSH Proxy Servers are set up at Nansha campus with a dedicated cross-border Internet link to HK campus. The Web Proxy Server is intended to speed up access to HKUST's websites and web-based resources while the SSH Proxy Server is intended for speeding up remote SSH connections to departmental servers.

Getting Started

Web Proxy Server

  • This helps user in Mainland to speed up access to Canvas and HKUST's Websites through Web Browsers (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari, etc.). Please note that this setup will NOT help access to websites blocked in mainland (e.g. Google, Facebook, etc.).
  • Users will need to enable the Proxy Setting in Web Browser and logon the Web Proxy Server Portal with ITSC Account.
  • Once successfully logon, users are granted access to the Web Proxy Server. Subsequest access to Canvas and HKUST's Websites will be directed to the Web Proxy Server and go through the dedicated Internet Link to speed up access.

SSH Proxy Server

  • This helps user in Mainland to establish and speed up remote SSH connections to HKUST's Servers via a Terminal Client (e.g. Putty).
  • Users will need to enable the Proxy Setting in Terminal Client and logon the Web Proxy Server Portal with ITSC Account.
  • Once successfully logon, user requests will be directed to the SSH Proxy Server and go through the dedicated Internet Link to speed up access.
