To facilitate teaching, learning, research and administrative activities on campus, ITSC provides a versatile internet infrastructure with fast and reliable connectivity to the internet world, including major research and education networks. At present, HKUST has two pathways to the internet: a private 220 Mbps internet connection solely for HKUST; and a 4.9 Gbps internet connection shared by the eight University Grants Committee-supported tertiary institutions via the Hong Kong Academic & Research Network (HARNET) , a regional network linking up all local tertiary institutions using a 10 Gbps optical network.
The current bandwidth for HARNET connections to local tertiary institutions and the internet are summarized below:
- 2 x 10 Gbps connections to each institution over HARNET Optical Network
- 4.9 Gbps shared international internet bandwidth
- 20 Gbps local internet connection to HKIX (Hong Kong Internet Exchange)
- 155 Mbps direct connection to CERNET (China Education and Research Network)
- 150 Mbps direct connection to TEIN4 (Trans-Eurasia Information Network)
HARNET also links to the following national research and education networks via HKIX:
- APAN-JP (Asia Pacific Advanced Network – Japan)
- ASGCNet (Academia Sinica Grid Computing Center)
- ASNet (Academia Sinica Network)
- KREONET (Korea Research Environment Open Network)
